Change your Default Web Browser

When you click a link in your email, or open an HTML file on your computer, it is generally opened by the default web browser on your computer. Sometimes programs can change what your default browser is without you knowing until you click on a link.

To change your default web browser back to your choice:

Macintosh OS X

  • Open the System Preferences from the Dock or Apple menu
  • Click Internet.
  • Select the Web tab.
  • Click Select from the Default Web Browser pulldown menu.
  • Navigate to your choice browser application (usually found in the Applications folder).
  • Close the System Preferences.

Macintosh OS 8-9

  • Click the Apple menu, go to Control Panels and click Internet.
  • Click the Web tab.
  • From the Default Web Browser pulldown menu select your preferred browser. Note: If your preferred browser is not in the pulldown use Select to choose an application from your hard drive.
  • Click Save to save the changes.

Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98, & NT

To set Internet Explorer as the default browser

  • Open the Control Panel and go to the Internet Options.
  • Click the Programs tab.
  • Check the option Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.
  • The next time you open Internet Explorer, you should be prompted to set it as the default browser.
    If the option Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser is already checked, click the Reset Web Settings button (Uncheck Also reset my home page to keep your current homepage settings). This will reset Internet Explorer as the default browser. You may need to reset your Default Email and Default Newsgroup programs after resetting Internet Explorer like this.

To set Netscape 7 as the default browser:

  • Open Netscape 7. Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  • Expand the Advanced category by clicking the triangle next to it and choose System.
  • Check HTML documents in the Windows should use Netscape 7 to open these file types. Note: If you would like image files (like jpg or gif) to open in Netscape 7, check those options as well.
  • Check http: (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and https: (Secure HTTP) in the Windows should use Netscape 7 to handle these protocols.
  • Check the option Alert me if other applications change these settings.
  • Click OK to save the changes.

To set Netscape Communicator 4.x as the default browser:

    If Netscape does not prompt you to set it as the default when it opens, you will need to edit the Netscape preferences file. To do this:
  • Close Netscape completely.
  • Open your personal profile directory. It's usually found in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\Profilename.
  • (You may want to create a backup copy of the Prefs.js file first)
  • Open the Prefs.js file using Notepad. (If necessary, hold the Shift key, and right click the file to get the Open with option.)
  • Change the line below from true to false
    user_pref("browser.wfe.ignore_def_check", true);
  • Close and save the file.

    The next time Netscape opens, you should be prompted to set it as the default browser. Tip: Do not check the Do not perform this check in the future.
